Is this group facilitated by a mental health professional?
This is a peer-led support group, which is different from a professionally-led support group. Although the group has a facilitator who is responsible for meeting logistics, guiding discussion, and ensuring a safe and respectful environment for sharing, this facilitator is not a mental health professional who is delivering specific group therapies.
Do I need to pre-register for meetings?
While it is helpful for the facilitator to know in advance how many people will be in attendance at each meeting, pre-registration is not a requirement. If you have a couple of minutes to send a quick email to [email protected], to let the facilitator know that you plan to attend a meeting, it would be greatly appreciated. However, please know that you are always welcome to just drop-in!
Do I need to attend every meeting?
No. This group is intended to benefit those struggling with infertility on an as-needed basis. Some people may attend every meeting, while others may attend only one. Unlike professionally-led support groups, peer-led support groups are generally "drop-in" in nature and operate on an ongoing-basis, as opposed to for a set number of sessions.
Is this group for women only?
Anyone who is struggling with infertility, man or woman, is invited to participate in this group.
Is there a fee to participate in this group?
No. This group is free to the community.
Do I have to speak/share at meetings?
Sharing is encouraged at meetings, as sharing is what creates an opportunity for connection and learning among group members. However, sharing is by no means a requirement. Attendees will only be asked to do what makes them feel comfortable, and for some, this might mean simply sitting quietly and listening to other people's stories.
How long has this group been operating?
This group is a brand new offering in Nelson. It was started with the intention of filling an infertility-related resource gap, as well as creating a forum for people to connect around their shared experience with infertility; people who might otherwise feel isolated.
When does this group meet?
The group meets on the last Wednesday of every month, from 7-9pm, in the Chapel Room at Kalein Hospice Centre. Visit the Contact Us page for directions.
